Mitigate Unwanted Injuries Through Mandatory Forklift Safety Training

Per rule 29CFR 1910.178 (1) from OSHA, all individuals that operate powered industrial trucks must under go forklift safety training. The specific definition, via OSHA, of a powered industrial truck is a truck that is power-propelled, mobile and used to lift, push, pull, carry, stack or tier supplies or materials (commonly known as a forklift). This definition excludes over the road trucks or earth moving trucks/machines. While these relatively small trucks (forklifts) may seem harmless, there are close to a hundred deaths and thousands of injuries reported yearly from their operation. This unfortunate fact caused OSHA to develop the above rule.

Rule 29CFR 1910.178 (1) is directly concerned with the proper operation of all industrial power-propelled machines new and/or second hand. The rule simply states that all employers are required to assure that each operator receive proper forklift safety training as periodic follow up testing in proper operation. This training must focus on safety in the workplace, features specific to the forklift they will be driving and complete operation instruction. Following this training, each employee must demonstrate competence in the operation of said forklift. Because various forklifts are designed to perform specific jobs, operators must be proficient in the type of forklift or forklifts they will be required to operate. This program/rule is in place to assist in mitigating unwanted and unnecessary injuries or deaths related to inappropriate forklift operation.

To assist employers in forklift safety training, the National Safety Compliance in conjunction with OSHA regulations has developed materials and videos to maintain compliance with the rule. The video can be purchased in DVD or VHS format and covers OSHA standards, the various types of forklifts, pre-use inspection of a forklift, and basics of driving a forklift in addition to maintaining stability during operation. In addition to this eighteen minute video there is also a CD-Rom that provides a program outline, quiz, answers, certificate of completion, training log and a wallet card ID for successful candidates. The entire program can be purchased in English and/or Spanish and costs $125.00. This particular program includes a power point presentation. For those that are not interested in this tool, the program can be purchased without it for $100.00.

In addition to operation, proper care and inspection of the forklift is also paramount to assure its proper operation. Regular maintenance checklists can normally be found in the mcahines owners' manual. It should include all safety aspects such as brakes, backup alarms, seat belts, horns and lights. Moreover, when the forklift is not in use it may be useful to obtain lockout stations and kits. These can be purchased for $67.00 to $300.00 depending on the forklift style/type and the needs of the employer to effectively lockout-unwanted use of specific elements. These are also available through National Safety Compliance.
